SOVOG

SOVOG- “Stop Oro Valley’s Outrageous Giveaways.”

What the hell is wrong with these people?

My guess? They’re simply more of the “If we don’t build it, maybe all the people that have come to Oro Valley since we moved here when it was a little Podunk hippie town will go away” folks trying another tactic.

Of course, I find it interesting that it’s funded by Kroger (Albertsons), Frys, Basha, etc.- essentially, the local supermarket chains, along with a few other businesses. Why are they so worried? Well...

Ooh. Wait a tic... this isn’t just seen by Oro Valley residents, is it. (Granted, chances are it is in fact seen by Oro Valley residents only; specifically, one Oro Valley resident, and one alone. Me.)

But anyway- In case for some bizarre reason someone comes across this-

Oro Valley is building a pretty sweet mall setup; a couple dozen stores, some large anchor shops, and a big theatre. (I’d give details, but my ‘net connection sucks right now. Stupid work firewall.)

Well; in order to get the company to build it here, quickly, cheaply, and to get it filled with businesses right quick, the city has agreed to split sales tax income from those shops 50/50 for a couple of years with the developer.

Now; I can see some residents being peeved at this; I mean, yeah, that’ll be a lot of money.

BUT; the city isn’t LOSING anything with this. What this group doesn’t get (or rather, the residents that have joined it- I doubt seriously that the businesses don’t know this) is that this income the city is “giving away” wouldn’t exist without these shops being built, and that this is a requirement for their being built. Granted, the city MIGHT be able to get it build without the deal, but it’ll be years and years down the road. Why not get the extra income NOW and get all the crap here fixed. Maybe even get the city to hire more than one crew to work on 4 projects at once... O_o (More on that later; I think I’ll photoblog that.)

Anyhoo; the stooges are just that; the businesses... well; I have no doubt that if the city made that deal with them, they’d shut this group down in no time flat. But it would be idiotic for the city to do that; what would they get out of it? What would the citizens get out of it? Nothing. Same for NOT making this deal.

Grr. Idiots.
