WoW: CTmod Vs. Cosmos
So Yesterday when I got back from the office I decided to try CTmod out, just because some of my guildies rave about it, and Rand had said he was thinking about switching over, as well. (Because how error prone cosmos seems to be after patches.)
So... I’ve played maybe 4 hours with it. I’m quite impressed. Granted, I tossed in a ton of other mods to add to CTmod, but meh.
So; Cosmos Pros:
- Has an .exe file for automatically updating
- Comes with a ton of mods built in, while allowing you to kill them individually. Map Mod, telo’s Clock, and so on.
- Easy setup with the cosmos options screen; nicely sorted options, very pro looking.
- Sidebars and Second Bar add 24 more buttons to play with, and Popbar is another 24, for a total of 60 buttons (IF I’m remembering right and did all the math right. I AM at the office, after all...)
Cosmos Cons:
- Comes with a ton of mods built in. You add much more than it comes with, and you risk overloading your UI memory reserved for all the scripts.
- Not too flexible; most mods are on by default.
- Sidebars aren’t too flexible, and with 6 buttons a side, don’t give you all that much extra room.
- Popbar has to be messed with to get it to be useful, and when you place it so that it’s next to the second bar, the top level ends up under the “Casting/Channelling” bar- meaning any spells placed in the first couple of buttons on that row are unusable.
- Comes with a ton of mods built in. Too many. How often have I used divine blessing? Never. Totem Stomper? Same. Vickel? I mean, come on. Pizza? Yeah, great. You know, if you want to give “props” to your team/friends/whatever, do it in the readme.
- Cosmos team, while innovative and great at modding, also have a bad habit of hiding “easter eggs” in cosmos- for instance, any cosmos team member that runs past you ingame will have their name show up in extra-large, highlighted letters, etc. It’s nearly impossible to get this turned off. And the cosmos team was, for a while there, adding custom titles to certain player names. Good ones for their programming team, and insulting/rude names for folks they weren’t fans of.
CTmod Pros:
- Doesn’t come with much, but what it DOES come with is extremely flexible. Sidebars can be 6, 9, or 12 buttons, 4 ways to display your health/mana, 8 for party members, choose how many buffs/debuffs to show on the party member’s portraits, and several different ways to do so, etc. etc.
- ALL CTmod frames are movable.
- Most frames are movable with CTmod.
- Movable bags
- Very small footprint in memory.
- Sidebars with up to 12 buttons PER bar (24 on sides)+Main bar and Second Bar(24)+2 hotbars of 12 each(24)=72 buttons.
- Not standard but part of a CTmod package- Raid helper (or somethig like that)- display raid member health, mana, buffs, debuffs. Only requires one member of each party to have the mod (but better if all have it.)
- Second Bar and hotbars move the channelling bar automatically- now you can cast spells with buttons that are where the default position of the casting bar is.
CTmod Cons:
- Doesn’t come with much beyond display options and sidebars.
- Uh... Did I mention it doesn’t come with many other mods?
- Hrm... there must be more cons in here somewhere...
- Hrm. I guess that’s it. Just doesn’t have many other mods. Which you can view as a pro...
I use plenty of other mods with CTmod; But I’ll wait to post on those until I get home- then I can get an ACCURATE list, and give links.
